Why hardware designed with no thought of beauty often turns out more beautiful than hardware designed to be beautiful.
Scheduled for publication. A piece on how functional constraints — aerodynamics, strength, manufacturability — shape the appearance of hardware, and why the result so often reads as an aesthetic statement.
The article examines three examples from the collection: the lines of Buran, dictated by atmospheric entry requirements; the layout of the MiG-29, where fuselage shape is set by intake behaviour at high angles of attack; and Lunokhod, whose body shape is determined simultaneously by heat exchange and the demand for mobility.
The general thesis: where form is governed by physics rather than fashion, the result ages more slowly. The 1950s hardware in the early aviation hall looks more convincing today than the industrial design of the same era — because the laws it was built by have not changed.
